    Michael Collins

On 16th October 1890 Michael Collins was born in Sam's Cross, near Clonakilty in Ireland . He was the youngest of eight children. His father, also called Michael Collins, was 60 years old and his mother Marianne O'Brien was 23 when they got married. The father was 75 years old when Michael junior was born. On his deathbed he said about his son: “'One day he'll be a great man. He'll do great work for Ireland.” At that time Michael was 6 Years old.
Michael was really interested in Irish history. This was encouraged by his teacher, Denis Lyons, and the blacksmith, James Santry. Both were members in the “Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB)“. When Michael was fifteen years old he went to London because the possibilities for working were much better than in his hometown. He lived with his sister Johanna in West Kensington and worked for the local Postal Savings Bank. He was really committed in the situation of Irish Immigrants and joined the „Gaelic Athletic Association“. There he got to know Sam Maguire, who convinced Michael to become a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. Later on Michael Collins became first the secretary and then the president of the IRB.
In 1916 Michael returned to Ireland to take part in the revolt against the British. This revolt had been named “Easter Rising” because it took place on the Easter Monday, admittedly it was a Disaster because in Collins opinion the course of action was really unintelligent. The idea to squat (besetzen) several houses, which were difficult to protect, was from his point of view more than bad. However he played a minor part in the rising. When the Rising ended by capitulation Collins was arrested in Frongoch in Wales.
When he was released in December 1916 he became a member of “Sinn Fein” and on 17th October he got to be a board member of this camp and organisation’s leader of the “Irish Volunteers”.
    The Civil War
In December 1918 the House of Common called for elections. Sinn Fein and also Michael Collins campaigned (kandidieren). Collins was chosen and the camp won 73 of 105 seats. The candidates, who weren’t in prison met each other on 7th January 1919 in the Mansion house in Dublin to made her own Irish parlement, leaded by Eamon de Valera. Further more Collins became in April 1919 the finance minister of this Parlement and got to purchase money for the civil war. Here he got to work at the background because he had become the most wanted man in Ireland with a price of £10,000 on his head. In September 1919 Collins got to be the Geheimdienstchef of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), which was transformed out of the Irish Volunteers.
    Anglo-Irish Treaty
In 1921 both sides, the Irish and the British weren’t able to win the conflict on military way. For that reason both wanted an agreement. On 11th July 1921 the ceasefire was called and the treaty talks began, this lasted very long. Not until the 6th of December the Anglo-Irish treaty was declared, which involved a free state of Ireland. Admittedly 6 counties of north Ireland were free to leave the Irish free State. Now the biggest part of Ireland was independent but the long discussion split the Irish Parlament . Collins really stuck up for the treatment. One reason for this was that he thought the IRA was too weak for a second war. Finally the rivals of the treatment left the parlament leaded by Eamon de Valera.

    I don't know what I want
So don't ask me 'cause I'm still trying to figure it out
Don't know what's down this road
I'm just walking, trying to see through the rain coming down
Even though I'm not the only one who feels the way I do
