The ideal of the American Dream
Today I want to talk about the ideal of the American Dream.
At first I explain what the American Dream means.
The American Dream is a subjektive term usually implying a successful and satisfying life. This term is used by many modern Americans to signify success in life as a result of hard work.
The American Dream is often associated with immigration, as the dream of religious freedom, economic prosperity and opportunity has historically led immigrants to the United States.
John F. Kennedy said the important reasons for the immigration to America were religious persecution, political oppression and economic hardship.
And so America is a nation of immigrants.
In the opinion of Edward N. Kearny the immigrants came to America because they hoped of individual freedom, equality of opportunity and material wealth.
These facts were advantages for immigrants.
But there were disadvantages too as selfreliance, competition and hard work.
In general all had the dream of a new society, where the individual freedom must be very important.
This ideal of the American Dream existed for more than a century before it was formulated and witten down by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence.
The fundamental principles of American democracy by the name of the “inalienable rights” are:
- equality
- liberty
- persuit of happiness
Equaltiy contains the equaltiy of opportunity, political equality, racial and social equality.
The equality of opportunity express each individual should have an equal chance for success.
And the poltical equality say everyone has the right to vote.
Liberty contains individual freedom, religious, political and economic freedom.
Individual freedom express everyone is free of controls.
Furthermore persuit of happiness means the personal fulfilment.
This right express that everyone should live happy.
And in America there is unlimited possibility.
Now I come to the American Dream and historical reality.
American history and the development of the nation shows the discrepancy between America´s historical reality and the American ideal of equality, liberty and the chance of personal fulfilment.(Könnte man diesen Satz vielleicht auch umschreiben?Hab es versucht, nur kam dabei nicht viel heraus!)
The concept of a classless society wasn´t a good idea from the beginnig and the following facts are decisive:
- the existence of a native population that resisted white life style
- the indroduction of slave trade
- the long history of racial discrimination
- the exploitation of many immigrants as cheap labourers
Until today in American society racial discrimination often prevails.
For example some minorities still scrape a living in slums.
On top of that the persuit of happiness has turned into a blind persuit of material wealth and economic success.
It follows that rivalry and competition put pschological and social pressure on the individual.
In the end you can say that the American society has become obsessed with an upward mobility to reach the top.
Es grüßt euch Mia
